7031
A service terminated unexpectedly
- Log: System
- Source: Service Control Manager
- Services
- Warning
What it means
A service crashed. The event shows how many times it has done so and the recovery action taken. 7034 is similar when no recovery action is set.
Why it matters
Repeated crashes of the same service point to a bad update, corrupt data or a resource problem.
What to do
- Look in the Application log at the same time for an Application Error (1000).
Find it with PowerShell
Get-WinEvent -MaxEvents 20 -FilterHashtable @{
LogName = 'System'; Id = 7031
} | Select-Object TimeCreated, ProviderName, MessageAdd -ComputerName SERVER to query another machine. Other event sources can reuse the same ID number, so check the ProviderName column.
