Reset your work password

Forgot your Microsoft 365 work password or it expired? Reset it yourself with self-service password reset, then update it on your other devices.

Last verified October 3, 2026

If your organization has self-service password reset turned on, you can reset your own password any time without waiting for us.

Symptoms

  • You’ve forgotten your password.
  • You’re told your password has expired.
  • Your account is locked after too many wrong attempts.

Cause

Forgotten or expired password, or repeated failed sign-ins (often an old password saved on a phone).

Fix

1. Start the reset

  1. Go to passwordreset.microsoftonline.com, or select Forgot my password on any Microsoft sign-in page.
  2. Enter your work email address and the characters shown.

2. Verify it’s you

Approve with the methods you registered, such as the Microsoft Authenticator app, a text message or an alternate email.

3. Choose a new password

Use a long passphrase you haven’t used before. See Create strong passwords and passphrases.

4. Update your other devices

Update the password on your phone’s mail app, Teams and any tablet straight away. Old passwords on mobile devices are the most common cause of lockouts. See Find what’s locking out an AD account if lockouts continue.

5. On a Windows PC

Connect to the office network or VPN, then lock and unlock the PC (Windows + L) with your new password so Windows picks it up.

If that didn’t work

  • “You can’t reset your own password”: self-service reset isn’t enabled for your account, or you haven’t registered verification methods. Register them at aka.ms/mysecurityinfo once you’re signed in.
  • Office or domain PC still wants the old password: sign in once on the office network or VPN.

When to call us

  • You can’t verify your identity, or your phone was lost or replaced.
  • You didn’t request a reset but received a code or prompt. Deny it and contact us: someone may know your password. See What to do if your email account is compromised.
